Cancer has ‘Gotten Younger’ in Armenia: Expert

The most common disease among women is cancer and cervical cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting women, said Director of Armenian-American Wellness Center (Mammography Center) Khachanush Hakobyan, while speaking to journalists today about cancer and its prevention.

Hakobyan presented the work of the Center, stating that beginning from 2002, they have checked 104,000 women, of which 6,100 revealed a tumour in their breast. The youngest woman to visit their center was 16 years old.

“This disease has gotten younger. Perhaps the reason is that the public is more frequently visiting doctors. But there’s a positive side too, that there’s an opportunity ahead of time to prevent it [cancer],” she said.

Gayane Mamikonyan, PhD, in turn, said that according to the Center’s information, every 16th visit revealed breast cancer in a patient. She also presented the latest research results from the US in this field, according to which breast cancer worldwide is prevalent among upper-class women.
