After the Russo-Georgian war, Moscow’s promises that the Russian base in Armenia won’t be used against Azerbaijan can’t be believed, said “Turkey 21st Century” Russian-Eurasian Research Institute Director Alesker Aleskerli, in an interview with Vesti.az.
According to him, Russia understands it is the owner and ruler of the Caucasus and that it holds the key to the resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict in its hands.
Asked how realistic is the ratification of a Turkey-Azerbaijan military agreement as a response to the Russia-Armenia agreement, Aleskerli said that “No concrete steps have been taken in this regard since 1991.”
“The issue is that successive governments in Turkey don’t have a single point of view on the issue of the importance of the a military presence in the Caucasus,” he said.
According to the expert, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, Turkey had a good opportunity to strengthen its position in the Caucasus, but the government of Suleyman Demirel wasn’t able to effectively make use of that opportunity.
