In an interview with Fox News, Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili said that Russia is ruled by Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, who ruthlessly treats his own citizens.
As an example of Putin’s ruthlessness, Saakashvili recalled Russian enterpreneur Mikhail Khodorkovsky. “
The most talented businessman Khodorkovsky is still in prison… he served his term in a gulag in Siberia, so they had to let him go, but now they brought him back basically [and] tried him a second time… for the same stuff,” he said.
The Georgian leader also recalled that Washington’s official position is that “the Russians are illegally occupying part of Georgia”; that is, South Ossetia and Abkhazia (two breakaway republics in Georgia). According to Saakashvili, how else would you call it when one country enters another’s territory, takes a piece of that territory and expels 80% of the population.
