The meeting between Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and US President Barack Obama makes up for the fact that Armenia, “considered to be a strong nuclear power,” participated in the International Nuclear Security Summit in Washington, while Azerbaijan did not, said Caucasus Institute Director Alexander Iskandaryan during a Sept. 25 press conference.
According to him, it’s clear from the information received that Obama, in speaking with Aliyev, spoke about the OSCE Minsk Group, noting that he sees the future process of talks on Nagorno-Karabakh to be within the Minsk Group format.
“I don’t think that Aliyev’s speech [at the 65th session of the UN General Assembly] was interesting, since it was to be expected,” said Iskandaryan.
On the matter of Obama’s remarks, the analyst placed importance on the fact that Obama broached the topic of jailed Azerbaijani bloggers Adnan and Emin and the need to protect human rights.
“That shows the United States’ attitude toward all that which happens in Azerbaijan,” concluded Iskandaryan.
