Hovhannisyan on Upcoming Azerbaijan Elections and Karabakh’s Independence

In the expectant, upcoming elections in Azerbaijan, certain tweaks surrounding the Nagorno-Karabakh issue will be noticed, but not more, said Armenian Revolutionary Federation–Dashnaktsutyun (ARF-D) representative Vahan Hovhannisyan, while speaking to journalists today.

“Azerbaijan is victim of formal democracy. It has strained a trap in which has fallen not only it [Azerbaijan], but also the entire region. Anti-Armenian sentiments begin before every election, fiery speeches will be heard, but a real flaring up won’t happen,” said Hovhannisyan.

The ARF-D representative also spoke on the issue of the Republic of Armenia recognizing Nagorno-Karabakh’s independence.

“Recognizing NKR[‘s independence] shouldn’t raise any issues for Armenia: it has to pass in parliament with 131 votes in favor, and even if there are deputies who are ill, it’s all the same, they have to participate in the voting. And if there are some political issues and it won’t pass by 100% [vote], then the voting for that issue should be delayed,” said Hovhannisyan.
