Armenia’s Committee for the Protection of Political Prisoners and Persecuted People issued a statement today on the recent events surrounding imprisoned editor of Armenian Times Nikol Pashinyan.
The statement reads as follows:
“The media has reported that a program has been created by the management of the RA Ministry of Justice’s prison administration department against political prisoner Nikol Pashinyan to begin using new [forms of] persecution. It’s stated that the prison administration management has been ordered by top RA government circles to begin criminal repression against… Nikol Pashinyan.
“The purpose: to prevent his journalistic activities disseminated in the press. Significant is the fact, to silence the political prisoner, to reach their aim, the RA authorities attempt to use the criminal world, the work style, that was widely used in Soviet prisons.
“Armenia’s Committee for the Protection of Political Prisoners and Persecuted People calls on lawyers, journalists, and representatives of NGOs and political organizations working in the Republic of Armenia, as well as representatives of international organizations, [and] all interested people, RA citizens, regardless of their political views and orientation to raise their voices in defense of all political prisoners kept in RA prisons and, in this specific case, in defense of political prisoner Nikol Pashinyan.
“Only as a result of our joint protest and struggle will it be possible to counteract the danger that is hanging over Nikol Pashinyan’s head.
“Today, together defending Nikol Pashinyan and other political prisoners, we are defending ourselves, our right to live freely, to express freely, to our free future and to creating freely.”
