German Writer Criticizes President’s Remarks on Islam

Well-known German writer Ralph Giordano has written an open letter to President of the Federal Republic of Germany Christian Wulff, in which he sharply criticizes the German president’s remarks who said that Islam, like Christianity and Judaism, is part of German culture, reports Lenta.ru.

In the letter, Giordano says that Wulff is expressing “wishful thinking,” believing that the Islamic world’s values can be combined with the values of modern Western civilization such as women’s equality, pluralism, and the principle of separation between religion and state.

Giordano notes that he is concerned of the future of democracy in Germany, and he is willing to speak out against any religion, including Christianity and Judaism, if it threatens liberal values.
