Some Territories Should be Transferred in Exchange for NKR’s Independence: Opposition

In order to regulate the situation in Armenia, first and foremost a change in the political system is necessary, and then, normalizing relations with all neighbors as fast as possible, said Armenian National Congress (HAK) representative and former Yerevan mayor Vahagn Khachatryan at a press conference today.

He added that the Nagorno-Karabakh issue should be resolved, since there isn’t a place in the world where there’s a conflict zone were investments are made.

“How many people do you know who have invested in Nagorno-Karabakh’s border lands? Only in Stepanakert have three hotels been built by foreign investors and that’s all,” he said, adding that there was such a program when he was in office: those border lands were to have been negotiated, economic investments were to have been made.

“And why doesn’t this government adopt such a policy? It was assumed that they were going to be more interested, but it’s the opposite,” said Khachatryan.

In such a state, according to Khachatryan, when not only have those territories not been populated but there’s practically no one left there, for quick resolution of the conflict, it’s necessary to sit and negotiate with Azerbaijan and, why not, make concessions.

“If necessary, some territories should be handed over in exchange for Nagorno-Karabakh’s independence,” he said.
