Armenian Opposition Picket, Rally and March Today

At 12 pm today, the Armenian National Congress (HAK) will be organizing a six-hour-long picket in front of the Government Guest House at 47 Mashtots Ave. next to the Matenadaran (Mashtots Institute of Ancient Manuscripts). Note that the Council of Europe (CoE) Forum for the Future of Democracy kicks off at the guest house today, in which a number of high-ranking CoE officials, including CoE Secretary General Thorbjørn Jagland, will be participating in the three-day forum.

The opposition group is preparing to show the forum participants its protest to Armenia’s current political climate. In particular, the group will be focusing its picket on the issue of political prisoners in the country.

Note that on Oct. 1, HAK leader Levon Ter-Petrossian submitted a letter on behalf of HAK to Jagland, in which the Armenian National Congress “demand[s] that more adequate measures be taken by the Council of Europe for Armenia’s democratization, including establishing stricter monitoring regime for Armenia.”

After the picket, at 6 pm, the opposition group will be organizing a rally in front of the Matenadaran, which will be followed by a march along the streets surrounding Freedom Square (near the Opera building).
