Hunger Strike Against Construction of Aquarium in Yerevan

Armenian writer and publicist Vahram Tatikyan announced on his Facebook page yesterday that he will begin a termless hunger strike at 12 pm on October 20 as sign of protest against the Yerevan City Hall’s decision to construct a dolphinarium (an aquarium of dolphins) in Komitas Park, near the Pantheon.

Vahram Tatikyan demands that the Pantheon be included in the list of Armenia’s historical and cultural monuments.

The construction of the circular tank initiated by a Ukrainian organization Nerum began in Armenia in August. The construction is carried out on land leased by the Yerevan Municipality (City Hall).

If plans are fulfilled, the dolphinarium – five meters deep and 18 meters radius – would house four dolphins, one sea lion and two seals.
