The West and Russia are concerned about the possibility of Azerbaijan initiating war in Nagorno-Karabakh, which is why they try to maintain the status quo, writes Farhad Mammadov in the paper Yeni Musavat.
In the author’s opinion, for this reason, the agreement between Russia and Armenia to extend the term of Russia’s military base did not cause any concern in Washington and Brussels.
“They believe that the new Armenia-Russia military agreement can be a deterrent in keeping Azerbaijan away from war,” writes Mammadov.
According to Mammadov, he has information that Western states are discussing the deployment of peacekeeping forces in the conflict zone even before resolving the conflict.
“These talks were conducted among the United States, the EU and Russia. But placing peacekeepers in the conflict zone prior to settling the conflict is beneficial for Armenia, since it will thus have the opportunity to indefinitely delay the resolution to the conflict, since it is confident of its security,” writes the author.
