Armenia Expects Response Gesture from Azerbaijan in POW Exchange

The Armenian side has no prior agreement with Azerbaijan on returning Armenian prisoners of war (POWs); however, we expect a responding gesture — it makes sense, said RA Ministry of Defense press spokesperson Davit Karapetyan, speaking with Epress.am on the recent news that Armenia will be returning a citizen of Azerbaijan to his home country tomorrow.

As reported earlier, the RA Ministry of Defense issued a statement, saying:

“In the frames of the Oct. 27, 2010 Astrakhan agreement reached during the meeting of the presidents of Armenia, Azerbaijan and Russia, on Nov. 4 at 12 pm on the northeastern border of the Armenian-Azerbaijani contact line, on the Ijevan-Ghazakh road, the citizen of the Republic of Azerbaijan, who had illegally crossed the Armenia border in 2010 and is now in the Republic of Armenia, will be returned to the Azerbaijani side.”

Karapetyan also stated that, according to official data, there are 3 Azerbaijani hostages in Armenia, two military personnel and one civilian, while Azerbaijan has 6 Armenian hostages.
