Armenia to Repatriate Bodies of Azerbaijani POWs: Azerbaijani Media Report

Armenia may hand over Azerbaijani soldiers Mubariz Ibrahimov and Farid Ahmadov’s remains to Azerbaijan today, said Azerbaijan’s State Commission on Prisoners of War, Hostages and Missing Persons Secretary Shahin Sayinov, report various Azerbaijani media.

Oddly enough, Armenia’s Ministry of Defense has not yet commented or issued a statement to confirm this news.

It is expected that the bodies of the POWs will be repatriated at 4 pm local time in the Aghdam section of the Nagorno Karabakh–Azerbaijan line of contact.

Azerbaijan, in turn, will hand over Republic of Armenia (RA) citizen Gavrush Rustamyan, 71, to Armenia.

Recall that on Nov. 4, Azerbaijan returned Republic of Armenia citizen Manvel Saribekyan’s body to Armenia. According to a statement by the RA Ministry of Defense, the transfer was made on the northeastern segment of the Armenia-Azerbaijan line of contact, in the section of the Idjevan-Ghazakh road.

On the same day, Armenia returned to Azerbaijan its citizen, Eldar Taghiyev, who about 10 months ago illegally crossed the border into Armenia.

Recall that at an Oct. 27 meeting in Astrakhan, Russia, the presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan agreed to exchange prisoners of war and repatriate the bodies of those who died while in captivity, with the support of the OSCE Minsk Group and the Red Cross.
