Armenian MP Considers Azerbaijan Elections Undemocratic

Chair of the RA Standing Committee on Defense, National Security and Internal Affairs, Armenian Revolutionary Federation (Dashnaktsutyun, ARF-D) parliamentary faction head Hrayr Karapetyan said yesterday’s Azerbaijan’s parliamentary elections were not democratic.

Meeting with journalists today, the parliamentarian said his opinion was based on Russian media reports, while Azerbaijani press, according to Karapetyan, mainly disseminated official reports.

There were violations in the elections, said the Armenian politician, while expressing hope that the OSCE and European Council observers will provide their objective assessment to the Milli Mejlis elections.

Comparing elections in Azerbaijan and Nagorno-Karabakh, Karapetyan said “both the presidential and the parliamentary elections in Karabakh are a hundred times more democratic than any election in Azerbaijan.”

Note that Nagorno-Karabakh is a de-facto independent state that broke away from Azerbaijan after a bloody war in the 1990s and is populated mainly by ethnic Armenians.
