Armenian Police Issue Statement, Respond to Apprehending Opposition Youth

The RA police have issued a statement in response to reports that four Armenian National Congress (HAK) youth were detained earlier this morning following a protest in Charles Aznavour Square (next to Cinema Moscow and Golden Tulip Hotel Yerevan).

The statement reads as follows:

“At 10:30 am on Nov. 9, police officers, suspected of instigating violence towards a government representative, apprehended from Yerevan’s C. Aznavour square to Central Division Areg Gevorgyan (born July 28, 1987), Sargis Ghazaryan (born April 5, 1992), Sargis Gevorgyan (born April 5, 1992) and Vahagn Gevorgyan (born July 19, 1991), who in the aforementioned site did not submit to lawful orders by officers protecting the public order, hurled insults and committing violence against one of the officers, tearing his uniform. A medical examination has been appointed. The circumstances are being clarified. An investigation is underway.”

Note that Sargis Ghazaryan was earlier reported as Sargis Khachatryan. Ghazaryan is the name noted on his passport; however, Khachatryan is how he identified himself.
