Detained Armenian Opposition Youth will be Released: Attorney

The four Armenian National Congress (HAK) youth — Areg Gevorgyan, Vahagn Gevorgyan, Sargis Gevorgyan and Sargis Khachatryan — who were detained by police following a protest this morning are feeling fine an don’t have any serious health issues, said Vahe Hovsepyan and Givi Hovhannisyan, the two lawyers representing the youth.

Hovsepyan told Epress.am that he believes the detained youth will be released. Hovhannisyan, in turn, said that the youth are undergoing a medical examination. They are currently being held at Yerevan’s Kentron central police station.

“From the beginning, the youth were apprehended illegally, and even now, when already 4 hours have elapsed to legally keep them detained, it’s obvious, why they’re keeping them,” said the attorney.

Note that the protest organized by the opposition group HAK youth today has already ended. The youth activists informed Epress.am that they are going to HAK headquarters to decide what to do next: whether they will go to the central police division or not.

Recall that HAK youth today were protesting in front of Golden Tulip Hotel Yerevan, where the two-day EU-Armenia Civil Society Seminar on the Right to a Fair Trial and Independence of the Judiciary is currently taking place.
