The Nagorno-Karabakh conflict can be resolved through negotiations, justice and mutual respect, according to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
In an interview with Azerbaijani TV station Lider, the Iranian leader said:
“The peoples of the region must live in peace and friendship. We are neighbors; we can not ignore our neighborhood. This is geography and history. If we try to resolve our problems fairly and amicably, then every problem will have its solution. The settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is also possible through negotiations, justice and mutual respect.”
In Ahmadinejad’s opinion, the existence of the conflict in the region is damaging for all the states in the region.
“This is the reason for the loss of wealth and time by both sides, the creation of nervousness and it prevents development. We have repeatedly announced and now assert that Iran is ready to help solve the conflict,” he said.
To a journalist’s comment that Armenia has not accepted Iran’s offer as mediator in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Ahmadinejad said that his country has declared its willingness to help resolve the issue.
“We have taken the first steps. If there are no results, then we will undertake other steps. We think the problem of the region should be resolved within the region. The interference of foreigners in such issues will cause further deepening of the conflict. Practice shows this. Let negotiations continue, god willing, there will be other ways out,” he said.
