A decision to discharge Armenia’s Police Chief Alik Sargsyan from his position was made recently, reports local daily Jamanak (“Times”). The paper reports that it was planned in advance to appoint Alik Sargsyan to position of RA Vice Prime Minister and RA Minister of Territorial Administration, instead of Armen Gevorgyan (who currently holds both posts). However, due to efforts by second president of the Republic of Armenia Robert Kocharian, Armen Gevorgyan will continue in his position, while Alik Sargsyan will be appointed RA Deputy Minister of Territorial Administration.
Currently vying for Alik Sargsyan’s police chief position are Yerevan Police Chief Nersik Nazaryan and former deputy police chief, current RA Minister of Emergency Situations Armen Yeritzyan. According to information received by the daily, however, a decision has been made among Armenia’s political elite that neither of these candidates will be appointed in this position.
