Negative Expectations for Astana Summit Didn’t Come True: Manoyan

The OSCE Summit in Astana, Kazakhstan, could’ve moved the Karabakh peace process into a deadlock, but that didn’t happen, said ARF (Armenian Revolutionary Federation) Dashnaktsutyun Armenian Cause Bureau Director Kiro (Giro) Manoyan, speaking to journalists in Yerevan today.

In any case, according to the politician, there also isn’t any progress.

“There was concern that a much worse document could’ve come about. That, naturally, didn’t happen. Naturally, because it would be somewhat incomprehensible, though there were certain concerns,” he said.

Manoyan explained that Turkey, using the opportunity given to him with the Armenia-Turkey Protocols and using that as leverage, attempted to get a document “which would satisfy it, so that it [Turkey] would ratify the Protocols.” Nevertheless, “the worse didn’t happen.” However, added Manoyan, the signed document is not very good.

“There are references to the Minsk Group Co-Chairs in the document: this and last year’s statements where noted are both the Madrid Principles and the elements arising from these principles, which are unacceptable for Dashnaktsutyun,” he said.
