“Basically, in our country, a man can be protected if he’s a member of the presidential administration, and more so, the police chief can even stupidly say there’s no victim and no criminal case will be launched. Chorni Gago [the less-than-flattering nickname used to refer to former Yerevan mayor Gagik Beglaryan] infringed upon the presidential apparatus. But it’s permitted for Osipovi, Bazazi to beat citizens,” head of the Helsinki Citizens’ Assembly Vanadzor office Artur Sakunts told journalists at a press conference in Yerevan today, referring to Beglaryan’s resignation.
According to human rights attorney Edmon Marukyan, who was also at today’s press conference, the mayor shouldn’t have resigned: a criminal case should’ve been launched, he should’ve been sentenced and with the fact of that sentence, he would’ve been released from his duties and a new mayor would’ve been appointed.
“This is a crime, what does it have to do with a dismissal; everyone’s saying he was punished, being punished is being accountable to RA legislation, not being dismissed,” he said.
