Baku Might Suspend Military Cooperation with US Because of Leaked Cables

Azerbaijan’s leadership is preparing to fully suspend its military cooperation with US, reports Lenta.az, citing its source in the upper echelons of Azerbaijan’s armed forces.

According to the source, some of the joint US-Azerbaijan activities that are planned for 2011 might be reviewed, while some might simply be postponed.

There is talk of possible termination of several joint programs including the Caspian (Sea) Maritime Security Program and restrictions on the use of air space. The American parties have already been informed of this, but the details will be discussed in the near future during meetings on security and defense.

Charge d’affaires of the US Embassy in Azerbaijan Adam Sterling confirmed the distrust and tension between the two countries following the WikiLeaks revelations. Sterling said that negotiations are currently underway to address the issues.
