Gérard Depardieu to play the role of Alexandre Dumas, the mixed-race author of the Three Musketeers, in a film about the author’s visit to Azerbaijan, reports various Azerbaijani media. Note that Depardieu played Dumas in the 2010 film by Safy Nebbou L’Autre Dumas (“The Other Dumas”).
In a meeting with Azerbaijani Minister of Culture and Tourism Abulfas Garayev, the French actor confessed to wanting to play Dumas himself.
“There are interesting facts about Alexandre Dumas’ visit to Azerbaijan and his affairs there,” he said.
Garayev then informed Depardieu that Dumas had been firends with the poet Khurshudbanu Natavan and the film would cover this relationship.
“Of course it would be better if Azerbaijani actress plays this role. Maybe this will be so. I am very pleased to be in Azerbaijan, you have a very beautiful city. Interesting historically important buildings, monuments attracted my attention,” Depardieu said in response.
Garayev said that the film is expected to be shot in 2-3 years. Different scripts will be prepared in Azerbaijan and sent to Depardieu for him to choose.
Depardieu was in Baku to attend the Fourth International Rostropovich Festival from Dec. 12–19. Today, he spoke at the Azerbaijani State Academic Opera and Ballet Theater before a performance of Carmen, where he read his favorite passages from the novella by Prosper Morime.
