If Worse Comes to Worst, Better to Leave Russia: Advice to Armenians Under Siege

Union of Armenians in Russia Vice-President Gegham Khalatyan, speaking to Regnum news agency about the latest bout of nationalism in Moscow, deplored the fact that Russian authorities still have not provided a clear political assessment of such events, reports Lragir.am.

“There isn’t a serious attitude about such events from the Russian leadership. They place the blame on individuals or a few radicals, when in fact what’s happening is a serious process of radicalization of Russian youth,” he said.

Khalatyan said that the Russian leadership must implement comprehensive measures to prohibit such disturbances in the future. “First, we must educate children and, in our own assessments, not be guided by the concepts of ‘Russian’ or ‘Caucasian,’ but by law-abiding citizens and criminals.”

The Union of Armenians in Russia is discussing the issue of how the Armenian community in Russia should proceed in the current situation, said Khalatyan.

“We’re not going to encourage people to sit at home and await developments. On the other hand, it’s impossible to do that because people work and they need to leave their homes. If it comes to that, that people sit at home under siege, then it’s better to leave the country and go back home,” said the Union of Armenians in Russia vice-president.
