Armenia never sold nor resold weapons to Iran. We have no military-technical cooperation, said Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan in an interview with Ekho Moskvy (Echo of Moscow) radio, commenting on a leaked WikiLeaks cable in which US diplomats concluded that Armenia supplied rockets and machine guns to Iran which were later used to kill US troops in Iraq. This, naturally, didn’t make the US State Department too happy.
“It’s necessary to note that we recognize Iran’s right to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, and we always say this loudly. We also have a nuclear power plant. Of course, we are likewise interested, both in our case and in Iran’s, that the work be carried out under IAEA supervision. In this regard, our position is very clear,” said Sargsyan.
According to the Armenian president, the case referred to by the WikiLeaks cable actually happened. “In some way or another, a few disposable grenades from Armenia appeared in Iran. They say, troops serving in Iraq were killed because of those grenades. By the way, there were Armenians there too.”
