Armenia Not Yet Evacuating its Citizens from Egypt (updated)

The Republic of Armenia (RA) has not yet made a decision to evacuate its citizens from Egypt, RA Ministry of Foreign Affairs press spokesperson Tigran Balayan told Epress.am today.

“If such a decision is made, we’ll let you know,” he said.

Note that a number of countries, including the US, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan and Azerbaijan, earlier announced they would be evacuating their citizens from the North African country.

Balayan informed Epress.am that the foreign affairs ministry —  through the hotline of Armenian Embassy in Egypt— was able to get in contact with about 10–15 Armenians who are currently in Cairo.

According to unconfirmed information, there are currently about 200 Republic of Armenia citizens in Egypt.

As previously reported, the Armenian embassy in Cairo launched a hotline. RA citizens requiring information or assistance, can call +20 122 163 850.

Update Feb. 1, 2011, 9:30 am local time: foreign affairs ministry established contact with Armenians in Egypt through the embassy hotline and not Facebook, as originally noted.
