When will Cyprus Recognize Karabakh’s Independence?

David Babayan, press spokesperson for the Nagorno-Karabakh president, responded to a question by local Armenian daily Aravot (“Morning”) as to whether he shares the opinion of some analysts who say that Cyprus will recognize the independence of the Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh (NKR).

“Of course, it would be desirable, but I don’t think that Cyprus will recognize [it], and that, the independence of Artsakh [NKR] because here there are a few issues. Cyprus is an EU member country and in its activities it has to be guided in accordance with the rules set forth by the EU. I think, Cyprus would make such a move only in one case: if Azerbaijan recognizes the independence of Northern Cyprus. Then the Republic of Cyprus will immediately recognize Artsakh’s independence as a similar move,” Babayan said, reports Aravot.
