The holding of free, fair and transparent elections is the main prerequisite for developing legitimate government that enjoys the people’s trust, which, however, hasn’t been ensured for 16 years, according to a statement by the Heritage Party on amendments to the RA Electoral Code.
“The revised draft of the Republic of Armenia Electoral Code developed by the ruling authorities’ working group in mid-2010 without the involvement of the opposition we consider not a current reform of the electoral code, but even more uncontrollable by the public and politicians, and with that, a suggestion to open wider possibilities to elections violations and falsified elections. One gets the impression that the government is not aware of the holding of free and legitimate elections, the development of government as a result of a truly EQUAL COMPETITION [capitals in original], but simply carries out the regular imitation of the requirements of PACE-approved resolutions since 2008,” reads the statement.
Heritage Party calls on all political parties which “stress the importance of approving a code that ensures free, fair and transparent elections to get involved in discussions aimed at reaching agreement on an alternative joint project.”
The party hopes to create an alternative joint draft, as a result of which a conference dedicated to this alternative draft to the RA Electoral Code prepared by a united opposition will take place.
