Iran’s Ambassadors in Yerevan and Baku Said What People Wanted to Hear

Iran’s ambassadors in Armenia and Azerbaijan gave press conferences at the same time yesterday. While Iranian Ambassador to Azerbaijan Mahammadbagir Bahrami in Baku assured local news agencies that Iran recognizes Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity and is prepared to provide assistance in resolving the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Iranian Ambassador to Armenia Seyed Ali Saghaeyan in Yerevan stressed the fact that he condemns those who look for a religious angle in the conflict.

“This is our position and Azerbaijan knows it quite well. We’ve always come forth as advocates of establishing dialogue between members of Christian and Muslim peoples,” he said.

In Baku, the Iranian ambassador urged “to pay close attention to the remarks of Azerbaijan’s and Iran’s presidents, who’ve always spoke of the brotherly relations between our two states. Iran always condemned and condemns the occupation of Azerbaijani territories. Our position has not changed.”

The Iranian ambassador in Yerevan said, “I think, there are no grounds for resuming war in Karabakh. Moreover, the Minsk Group co-chairs, as well as Russia, Iran and Turkey, as regional players, won’t tolerate war in this region.”

Speaking about the increase in Azerbaijan’s military spending, Saghaeyan said the military situation in the region will not lead to anything good. According to him, the international community should pay attention to this issue and monitor the situation.

The Iranian ambassador in Azerbaijan recalled Iran’s intervention in the 90s in the Karabakh issue, when Armenian forces succeeded in seizing Shushi. “America and Israel are guilty for that. If these two countries didn’t interfere, the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict would be resolved long ago.”
