‘To Reinstate the Law’: Friends of Blind Armenian Youth Show their Support

Today, the friends of 23-year-old Artak Beglaryan dropped his letter in the RA Ministry of Foreign Affairs box for letters and appeals. In the letter, Beglaryan asks that his rights, which have been violated, get reinstated.

Recall, Beglaryan had applied to study at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) diplomatic school; however, the young man was rejected because he is blind.

During the process of submitting the letter, gathered outside the MFA building were students from different universities: Russian-Armenian (Slavonic) University, Armenian State University of Economics and Yerevan State University (YSU).

Speaking to Epress.am, Sargis Khandaryan, the coordinator of the initiative to protect Beglaryan’s rights, said they’ll be monitoring the situation, so that their friend Artak’s rights are reinstated.

Arusyak Mirzoyan, a student with the YSU Faculty of International Relations, told Epress.am that they are going to try to get their friend’s rights reinstated.

“The issue here is about not only Artak studying, but also the violation of a regular RA law: we want the law to be reinstated,” she said.

Recall, Beglaryan, on Facebook, also republished the response from his open letter to the MFA which he received from MFA press spokesperson Tigran Balayan:

“The statement of dear Artak Beglaryan, no matter how understandable and touching on a human level, has given rise to various interpretations. The truth is the following: There are no technical features in the newly established MFA diplomatic school for providing equal conditions to citizens with limited capabilities not only in education, but also in the admission and the final written exams.”

Speaking to Epress.am earlier, Beglaryan expressed hope that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, nevertheless, will review its decision, but “he won’t take such actions until he is forced to.”

At the time, Beglaryan had said if the MFA doesn’t take action, he might, perhaps, appeal to the Human Rights Defender’s office.

Today, Artak’s friends informed Epress.am if Artak’s rights aren’t reinstated, he will take the issue to court.

Note, supervising the group were a few officers, who, approaching the students, tried to find out who went to which university.
