UN Asks Yerevan Vendors to Develop Business Plan, But Vendors Say That’s Impossible

UN Resident Coordinator in Armenia Dafina Gercheva met with a few of the Yerevan street vendors protesting outside the UN office earlier today.

Narine Vardanyan, who was one of the vendors Gercheva met with, told Epress.am that they shared their concerns in detail with the UN staff member.

“She listened to us, but said they’re not the agency that can solve this issue. In any case, she promised to raise the issue when her office meets with the Armenian government.

“She also said if we present them with a 6,000-person business plan, they’ll be able to help us,” she said.

Vardanyan, however, is convinced that they can’t carry out such a plan since the vendors are of different ages and work in different trades.

“Until city hall finds a venue, how long can we tell our children to remain hungry, how long can we not pay the electricity bill,” said Vardanyan, noticeably upset.

She informed Epress.am that their next protest will be on Feb. 17 at 10 am outside the government building.

Recall, the protest today began outside the Armenian government building at around noon but then moved to the UN office.
