‘We Too Want to Overthrow our Mubarak Here’: Opposition Rally Participants

“We’re gathering so that this government finally feels ashamed, ceases the price increases, lets us live in peace,” Hovhannes Hovhannisyan, who came from Aparan to participate in today’s Armenian National Congress rally, told an Epress.am correspondent on the scene outside the Matenadaran (Mashtots Institute of Ancient Manuscripts) in Yerevan.

Speaking about the likelihood of a Tunisia or Egypt scenario in Armenia, Hovhannisyan said he considers such scenarios to be likely.

“We too want to overthrow our Mubarak from his post. The reason isn’t only the social situation. In this country, man doesn’t feel human, human rights are violated, the value of a human doesn’t exist,” he said.

He noted that they came from Aparan, 300 people with their own cars, to participate in the rally. According to him, they arrived in Yerevan without any obstacles.

Another rally participant, who came from the city of Abovyan, was convinced that the events in Egypt being repeated in Armenia is ruled out, since “they’re Muslim, which disciplines them to be manly [man-like], while our Gospel [disciplines] us to be wet hens.”

“I give Levon Ter-Petrossian room, in all cases,” he said, adding that he barely made it to Yerevan since no public transportation was operational in Abovyan.

“Town and village mayors received orders for the inter-city transportation not to work. Even taxi services were warned not to go to work,” said the demonstrator.
