EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus Peter Semneby believes Russo-Georgian relations can be settled only through dialogue. He said this himself at a briefing in the Georgian capital of Tbilisi, reports Georgia Online.
“Only dialogue can lead to long-term stability in the region. In this regard, one can only welcome the efforts of the Georgian president, who expressed readiness to begin talks with Russian leaders,” he said.
He stressed that, in this issue, the EU is prepared to fully cooperate with Georgia.
“Georgians and Abkhazis, and Georgians and Ossetians have to sit at the negotiating table and solve all the problems; there simply isn’t another way to normalize relations,” he said.
The EU Special Representative believes that both sides have to compromise, in order to ensure peace and stability in the region. “Without compromise, it’s impossible to succeed. The EU is ready to make a contribution to this process and by all means try to bring the parties together,” he concluded.
