On Mar. 8, the Turkish government paid the 105,000 euros determined by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) in compensation to the family of slain Turkish-Armenian journalist Hrant Dink, reports Istanbul-based bilingual weekly Agos, the chief editor of which was Dink, up until Jan. 19, 2007, when he was assassinated by Turkish nationalist Ogün Samast.
Recall, on Sept. 14, 2010, the ECHR ruled that Turkey failed to protect Dink’s life as well as his freedom of speech and ordered the state to pay Dink’s family 105,000 euros in compensation.
As previously reported, the Dink family will donate the amount to three organizations: the Community Volunteers Foundation based in Turkey, which will use the funds toward a Hrant Dink scholarship fund; Istanbul Central School, with the aim of supporting the longevity of Armenian culture and education in Turkey; and the Gedik Pasa Armenian Evangelical Church, to support the education of the children of citizens of the Republic of Armenia who are refugees residing in Turkey.
