The massive unrest in the Middle East and North Africa, which led to the downfall of the ruling regimes in Egypt and Tunisia, are not similar to the “color revolutions” in the CIS, said Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov on Sunday.
“Drawing parallels are always quite risky and sometimes even counterproductive. Nevertheless, I still see more differences than similarities between the so-called color revolutions of the CIS and what is happening now in the Middle East,” he said.
According to the foreign minister, the situation in the Middle East is “to a great extent, the result of internal events and processes.”
“Certainly, modern information and communication technologies have played a role, but the impetus for the events became the people’s mood of protest, which was due to socioeconomic issues. Thus, I would reply: unlike in the post-Soviet states, in the Middle East the internal factor played a more important role,” he said, reports mk.ru.
