Yerevan mayor Karen Karapetyan is part of the current regime in Armenia. He stands by neither his professional nor his political activities and position, and he continues the same tradition that existed before, said former mayor Vahagn Khachatryan, speaking to Epress.am today on the occasion of Karapetyan’s first 100 days in office. Note, Khachatryan held the position of mayor from 1992–1996.
“In January, he began to tackle the issue of street trade — [carrying out] very unsuccessful, unnecessary actions. He tried to launch a PR campaign on the weakest link [i.e. the street vendors], to create the illusion that law and order is being established in the city,” said Khachatryan.
He noted that as a Yerevan resident he didn’t notice any changes in these past 100 days.
Khachatryan found it odd that the Yerevan mayor said he’s not involved in politics. “At the very least it’s surprising that he says that when he was in the [ruling] Republican Party’s proportional list, and the mayor’s position is not elected, it’s appointed. All this shows that the mayor is out of place,” said the former Yerevan mayor.
