Graffiti has long appeared on railroad boxcars and subways in cities around the world, including New York, London and Moscow. Now this “phenomenon” has come to Yerevan: unknown graffiti artists have tagged a handful of Yerevan subway cars, writes David Aryan on Yerevan.ru.
In the hope of getting more details behind this fairly new canvas chosen by artists, Aryan contacted the Yerevan Metro press service. Press secretary Ninel Vardanyan first asked what is “graffiti,” then refused to comment with the director being informed. For two weeks, she responded to the author’s questions with “I refuse to comment. This is simply absurd. We don’t respond to such questions. I am not confirming this incident.”
Later, the author was able to confirm certain details. According to underground railway employees, the incident took place on Mar. 24 and the results were discovered only in the morning.
“There were large markings on the cars parked at Barekamutyun Metro, which covered even the windows. The train was brought out and taken to the train yard, where the effects of hooliganism were removed. There’s no other way to call this phenomenon,” said one metro driver, expressing his disappointment.
“But I think that monotonous cars are boring and they can be painted in different color, but in a beautiful way. And in what way are those pictures worse than regular and useless ads?” said another subway driver.
