Opposition Does Not Allow Government to Weaken its Vigilance: Serzh Sargsyan

On the eve of tomorrow’s Armenian National Congress rally, Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan stated today that he has noticed positive trends in the activities of the extra-parliamentary opposition. He assessed these activities as aiming not to divide society, but rather to move the political field to a certain platform, reports Lragir.am.

“Rallies take place, speeches are made which are not intended to divide society, which are not intended to bolster up notions of crushing, which are intended to shift the political struggle onto a certain platforms.”

Sargsyan also touched upon the issue of Liberty Square. “It appeals to me that recently law enforcement bodies and organizers of opposition rallies cooperate, and there are no violations of public order.”

He said this might lead to Liberty Square again becoming a place of expressing alternative opinions. According to him, this is the real meaning of Liberty Square. “If events develop this way, I think with our joint efforts we can clear from the square those false perception that exist today, or more accurately [existed] yesterday, as an environment that feeds extremism. This is highly important for us.”

He recalled that Armenia celebrates its 20th anniversary of independence this year. “I would like to also remind [you] that we are all entering the month of May, a month of achievements, a month of victories for our people. In May we are going to celebrate Republic Day, a holiday which is full of very important lessons and these lessons are still relevant,” he said. According to him, no development problems have been solved through divide and malice. The Armenian president said we all must be able to defeat malice.

“And only the strong can overcome malice. Today we have a strong government; today we have an opposition which does not allow the government to weaken its vigilance, and through cooperation, we can ensure serious achievements for our country. Here too we are ready to be the first, we are ready to make steps towards easing tensions, and I have already instructed the

justice minister to come up with proposals,” he said.
According to him, it is necessary to accelerate steps towards establishing civil society and to make steps towards reducing the number of people who are dissatisfied.
