A public event page created on Facebook shows 413 people “attending” an event called “I am joining Levon Zurabyan’s sit-in” (in Armenian). Organizers of the event have said in addition to the Facebook attendees, 132 people thus far have called to say they too will join the event.
Note, the event was created by four activists with the opposition bloc the Armenian National Congress (HAK), who state that “if until May 31 at 6 pm, all political prisoners in Armenia’s prisoners are not released and do not greet HAK rally participants on the Liberty Square platform, beginning from that time, we will announce a sit-in of indefinite period at the same Liberty Square.”
A few days after creating the event, HAK activist Areg Gevorgyan (pictured), in an interview with local daily Chorrord Inqnishkhanutyun (“Fourth Self-Authority”), urged people to call him on his cell if they want to join the May 31 sit-in.
Speaking to Epress.am, Gevorgyan said people were quite actively responding to the call and joining the cause.
“The number of people wanting to participate in the sit-in is growing every minute, both on Facebook and through phone calls,” he said.
Recall, after the HAK rally and march on Apr. 28, a group of demonstrators didn’t want to leave and sat on the steps of the opera building, calling for a sit-in. HAK coordinator Levon Zurabyan appealed to the activists and said if all remaining political prisoners are not released by May 31, he will join the sit-in they are calling for.
