Despite protests from residents, trees once again were being cut down this morning in the area near the residential buildings of 5 Komitas Ave. in Yerevan where a high-voltage power station is also situated.
Speaking to Epress.am, Gohar, a resident of 5a Komitas, said how they were surprised to find certain activities taking place near the power station this morning.
“That station has been here for about 50 years. A few months ago, Liber LLC wanted to tear it down, to move it closer to the buildings and build a high-rise building in its place. But as a result of our complaints, these plans were stopped since, to put it mildly, it’s dangerous to move a power station with such high voltage closer to residential buildings,” she said.
Gohar mentioned that Liber representatives today approached residents with a document allowing construction to continue dated earlier than the one that stopped the construction.
“Now they’re asking us to show them the [paper with the] decision to stop [construction]. They promised to stop the work for a few hours — till they see this document,” she said.
In 2005, city hall permitted Liber LLC to build a 12-storey building in the area surrounded by buildings 5a, 3, 7, and 7/1 Komitas, and the station currently servicing tramways and trolley buses was to have been torn down and rebuilt practically adjoining building 5a.
However, in Oct. 2010, in response to a letter by Heritage Party MP Larisa Alaverdyan, RA Minister of Urban Development Vardan Vardanyan annulled the decision by Yerevan City Hall to permit this construction.
