Former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger of California fathered a child with a member of his household’s staff more than a decade ago, prompting his wife, Maria Shriver, to move out of their house once she found out earlier this year, according to a report in The Los Angeles Times.
“After leaving the governor’s office I told my wife about this event, which occurred over a decade ago,” Schwarzenegger said in a statement issued Monday night to The Los Angeles Times.
“I understand and deserve the feelings of anger and disappointment among my friends and family. There are no excuses and I take full responsibility for the hurt I have caused. I have apologized to Maria, my children and my family. I am truly sorry.”
Schwarzenegger, 63, and Shriver, 55, announced their separation last week after 25 years of marriage but did not provide a reason for it, reports The New York Times.
The Los Angeles Times, quoting an unnamed person, said Schwarzenegger, who left office in January, had supported the child financially.
The newspaper did not identify the member of the household staff. But the newspaper said she had worked for the family for 20 years before retiring this year.
The paper quoted her as saying that she had received a severance payment and that she had “left on good terms with them.”
