Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has signed a Federal Law on “Ratification of the Treaty between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Azerbaijan on the State Border,” reports the Kremlin’s official website.
The federal law was passed by the State Duma (parliament) on Jun. 17, 2011, and approved by the Federation Council on Jun. 22, 2011. Baku signed the law ratifying the treaty on Sept. 3, 2010.
The agreement is a basic document defining the passage of the land part of the state border between the two countries all along its stretch from the starting point to the Caspian Sea, reports Itar-Tass news agency.
The starting point, the point of conjunction of the borders of the Russian Federation, Azerbaijan and Georgia, is determined by separate tri-lateral agreements. The coordinates of the end point are determined by the Sept. 23, 2002 Russian-Azerbaijani agreement on the delimitation of the adjacent sections of the Caspian Sea. Thus, the process of defining the border between Russia and Azerbaijan in the context of international law is completed with the agreement’s coming into effect.
