Public Transport Companies Not Operating on HAK Rally Days Should be Deprived of License, Say Residents

Ahead of the Armenian National Congress (HAK) Jun. 30 rally, residents from the provinces of Aragatsotn, Ararat and Kotayk submitted 20 appeals to the transport and communications ministry regarding inter-city transport not operating, requesting the ministry and the transport inspectorate of said ministry to warn and penalize those companies that operate the regional routes. This news was conveyed to Epress.am by HAK representative Vladimir Karapetyan.

Recall, HAK activists have repeatedly stated that the public transport minibuses bringing passengers from the provinces to the capital stop working on days when a HAK rally is being held. Karapetyan said this is a violation of people’s rights and a means to discourage people from attending the opposition rallies.

The HAK representative also state that Razmik Zohrabyan, deputy chair of the ruling Republican Party, ahead of the last rally, had said that there would be no obstacles, the roads would be open, but, according to Karapetyan, it was proven once again that “this man’s words are worth nothing.”

Karapetyan noted that the residents from the three provinces, citing Article 12 Section 2 of the RA Law on Vehicular Transport, are asking the ministry to issue a warning to companies servicing the routes and if they violate the term prescribed by law, to deprive them of the right to operate.

Karapetyan added that they are currently waiting for a response to their appeals.
