Yerevan mayor Karen Karapetyan during a meeting on Monday instructed deputy mayor Kamo Areyan to resolve the issue of the water drainage system in the Armenian capital, Yerevan City Hall public relations officer Artur Gevorgyan told Epress.am.
“Since Yerevan’s water drainage system is quite old and clogged, naming a deadline to complete cleaning the entire system is a little bit unrealistic. But upon instructions by the mayor, joint work has begun with [Veolia] Yerevan Djur and Yerevan’s utility services toward improving this system. Cleaning work has already begun,” said Gevorgyan.
According to the press spokesperson, the mayor gave strict instructions to complete the work in a short deadline, so that in the case of natural disasters, it will be possible to avoid traffic jams and ensure residents’ ease of movement.
Note, as a result of thunderstorms in the Armenian capital on Saturday, huge lakes had formed on nearly all of Yerevan’s streets. Furthermore, Mashtots Ave., Grigor Lusavorich and Paronyan street intersections were blocked by road police since as a result of the clogged water drains, it was impossible for cars to pass.
