Women Who Threw Newborn in River Said Child was Already Dead

The mother of the dead newborn pulled out of Vorotan River near the Armenian town of Sisian is Sisian resident, 27-year-old Hermine Barseghyan.

As reported by Lragir.am, during her pregnancy, Barseghyan never went to the hospital and was never accounted for in the list of pregnant women.

Barseghyan gave birth at home, most likely on Jul. 8 or 9. According to her, it was a stillbirth. The day after giving birth, at 2 pm, she threw the baby’s corpse into the Vorotan River. An external examination has not revealed any evidence of assault.

A medical examination has been appointed which will clarify whether the child was dead at birth or not. If an autopsy reveals that the child was born alive, then Hermine faces up to 5 years of imprisonment for the crime.
