Nagorno-Karabakh Conflict Settlement Must be Accomplished by Minsk Group: Bryza

In the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, the US is involved at the highest level. US President Barack Obama and US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton are interested in resolving the conflict, and the OSCE Minsk Group will take the next step towards resolving the conflict, said US Ambassador to Azerbaijan Matthew Bryza in an interview with SalamNews.

Regarding the possibility of Iran mediating the conflict, Bryza said that the OSCE Minsk Group has achieved certain results in conflict settlement.

“We believe that the OSCE Minsk Group is functioning properly and is already working on a Framework Agreement. While there is still some work in preparing the document, the settlement of the conflict must be accomplished by the OSCE Minsk Group,” he said.

The disputed territory of Nagorno-Karabakh broke away from Azerbaijan after a bloody war in the 1990s and is populated mainly by ethnic Armenians. Today it exists as a de-facto independent state under an uneasy ceasefire, and OSCE-brokered efforts to resolve its status have so far been unsuccessful.
