World Car-Free Day is marked annually on Sept. 22. Organizers encourage people to walk, bike, use mass transit, work from home or find other alternatives to cars.
“As the climate heats up, World Carfree Day is the perfect time to take the heat off the planet, and put it on city planners and politicians to give priority to cycling, walking and public transport, instead of to the automobile,” notes the World Carfree Network which promotes car-free activities, but does not organise World Carfree Day itself.
Examples of ways World Car-Free Day has been supported in cities around the world include closing main avenues to cars, distributing free bus passes, offering free bike tune-ups and free walking gait analysis.
Now if only we could encourage Yerevan authorities and residents alike to do the same. Free marshrutka ride or bike rental, anyone?
