The Armenian National Congress (HAK) continued responding to questions by members of the public at Liberty Square Tuesday evening. HAK representative David Shahnazaryan shared with those gathered a document that was approved by the opposition bloc’s foreign relations committee, one aspect of which referred to German Ambassador to Armenia Hans-Jochen Schmidt.
HAK refrained from making comments after the first incident, Shahnazaryan said, referring to Ambassador Schmidt’s statements at a recent public forum, “considering it an accident.”
“No foreign ambassador has made a similar statement. He has never publicly criticized the Armenian government. We consider this bizarre behavior a flagrant interference in Armenia’s internal affairs and an open support for the Armenian authorities.
“We urge the authorities of the Federal Republic of Germany to pay attention to this, and we are confident that [Ambassador Schmidt’s] attitude does not correspond to the position of the German government,” he said, adding that the German ambassador has violated the ethics of diplomacy.
