The Council of Aldermen (or Council of Elders) at an emergency meeting in Yerevan City Hall today decided to elect the Armenian capital’s next mayor on Nov. 15.
Recall, now former Yerevan mayor Karen Karapetyan unexpectedly resigned from his post last week. The ruling Republican Party of Armenia (HHK) at a board meeting then nominated deputy mayor Taron Margaryan for the position. Since HHK has 35 seats in the Council while Armenia’s second most important governing party, Prosperous Armenia, has only 17, there is no doubt that the Council will vote for Taron Margaryan as the city’s next mayor.
