The system of local self-government bodies is near and dear to newly elected Yerevan mayor Taron Margaryan. The Republican Party of Armenia (HHK) member said so himself after today’s elections in which he received 49 out of 52 votes in his favor. The remaining three Council of Aldermen members were not present during the voting.
“This system is a system that’s dear to me, and working 7 years continuously in this system, I approach my work with compassion and enthusiasm. I have worked with three mayors and that work was a project of our political team, and all the mayors carried out these projects,” he said.
Speaking about his party work, Margaryan said he does it gladly and he is always ready to commit to doing his party work after work hours.
Asked what his nomination by the HHK was conditioned by, Margaryan said it was conditioned by the HHK board nominating his candidacy.
Reporters also inquired about the demolition of kiosks in the Armenian capital, a process that began during former mayor Karen Karapetyan’s term.
“On the matter of demolishing the kiosks, we have repeatedly stated that demolished will be derelict kiosks and those operating unlawfully, of which there are a precise number. The process is at its final stage. As for operating kiosks, we won’t be addressing them; we’ll be turning our attention to those shops on Abovyan St… we are going to talk with owners; we are going to try to give the sidewalks on Abovyan St. [back] to our residents,” he said.
As to who will be succeed Taron Margaryan in his former position as deputy mayor, this matter has not yet been discussed.
The mayor’s swearing-in ceremony will take place during a regular municipality meeting at 11 am on Nov. 18.
