Draft Law on Armenia’s National Anthem Passed Despite Protests by Heritage Party and Environmentalists

The Heritage Party parliamentary faction urged parliamentarians not to adopt the draft RA Law on the Anthem of the Republic of Armenia on the agenda of today’s emergency parliamentary meeting.

Several environmental and social activists opposing the law were gathered outside the National Assembly during discussion of the law today.

“This is simply a draft law to barbarically exploit our anthem and cause great damage to the environment, where, if I don’t say anything except that in the name of piles of waste, the trailings are devoted to Armenia — this already speaks about everything. We are suggesting to vote against this code, to listen to our public and its activists and to retract this draft law. Overall, I would want the government itself to be reasonable and retract this draft law,” said Heritage Party MP Stepan (Styopa) Safaryan, noting that his party, in any case, will be voting against the law.

Nevertheless, the draft law was voted upon and adopted by a majority of votes.
